Our Story

Black Monarch is the culmination of years of work refining the idea of what handmade furniture could be. The result is simple, pure design that leaves nothing to add and nothing to remove.

At the core of our mission, Black Monarch puts sustainability and purpose above all else. All of our raw materials have be hand selected for their quality, characteristics, and environmental impact. We believe that our place is to create work that lasts for generations.

Ash:

Prized for its strength and durability, Ash has long been used for furniture, flooring and sports equipment, but Ash is now under attack. The Emerald Ash Borer (an invasive beetle) has spread across North America and is threatening the 9 billion Ash trees that make up our forests. Pennsylvania alone is home to over 300 million Ash trees. We intend to use this resource to call attention this invasion, and to work with our local agencies who are researching and tracking the EAB. Our Ash hardwood lumber comes from family owned sawmills, sustainably harvesting logs in the heart of Northwest Pennsylvania forests.

Black:

Our signature black finish cloaks every piece of furniture that leaves our shop. Timeless, classic, versatile are reasons black has become synonymous with so many things. The little black dress, the black leather jacket, two things that make a statement but go with anything. We believe that our black furniture on its own is a bold statement, but when combined with your decor, it creates a beautiful backdrop for it to shine. An oil based blend, it is a non toxic zero VOC finish that offers great protection, depth of color, and is easy to maintain and touch up.
