The trip to Calgary was mostly work related, but I made sure there was time to explore the area. Since I have never been to Banff (except drving through it in 1993) I made sure I had a weekend day scheduled to do some serious exploring.

July 26, 2008 - Banff

For about 300K+ you could have a nice condo in the mountains.

There is something about seeing rain in the mountains. Peace.

Further down Highway 1 more rain...

Waiting at the gate to Banff.

Painting perfect picture.

A different view of the rest stop.

A closer look at a waterfall we saw from the rest stop.

I decided to take a random exit to a lake and this is what I found.

It was a little cold too.

Looked like there was a forest fire here at one time.

Seeds almost ready for the wind to take them away.

Beautiful screnery evrywhere!

There was a wedding group taking pictures here also.

There used to be a gold mine here. This is also what I was looking at while providing technical support to my customer.

Rain in the mountains.

The rain usually did not last long.

I stopped frequently along Highway 1 due to the beautiful scenery to take pictures.

A closer look at the water colour.

Golden mountains.

Another highway stop.

The rain moved quickly through the area.

I saw these over my head and made a quick getaway to the car.

Beautiful colours!

Glacier on the mountain.

Mountain flowers.

Moss.

Lake Louise and Queen Victoria glacier in the distance.

Another shot of Lake Louise.

The only hotel at the lake.

Pictures from around Lake Louise.

Going back to Calgary. More pictures along Highway 1.

July 27, 2008 - Banff

Wind mill I found at a rest stop in the mountains.

Looking West from the rest stop.

While waiting at the Banff Park gate I took this picture of the view that was behind me.

More Highway 1 scenery.

Our first stop was the Gondola as recommended by a few people.

The view from the top.

We spent a good hour at the top just relaxing and looking at the scenery.

Lake Louise.

Queen Victoria glacier.

View as I was going down the mountain.

Not exactly sure what kind of animal this was.

Looking out for predators.

I noticed the cave while driving the day before and made plans to stop and take pictures when we were going back the following day.

The cave from a distance.

Caramel popcorn!

This candy store smelled so good when walking past.

Fossilised tree.

Banff among the mountains.

Some deer we spotted in the residential area.

On the way to Johnston Canyon there were Elk feeding close to the road.

Grizzly mother bear with two cubs feeding on berries.

Starting the hike to the water falls.

Red squirrel feeding on seeds.

Mossy rocks.

Getting closer to the falls.

Well fed chipmunk.

Finally reached the water fall.

Small cave with stalactites.

The opening to the cave.

Moss on the trees.

Going back to the car.

Berries.

Wild rose. Alberta's provincial flower.

Another flower I found on the way back.

And even this tiny one.

Wild strawberry.

Beautiful scenery on the way back to the highway.

A pink spot in the sky.

At a truck stop I took some pictures of the fields.

Back in Calgary.

Olimpic village.

View of downtown Calgary.

July 28, 2008 - Great food and shopping!
